The origins of this British firm date back to the time when the daguerreotype process was patented in France (1839). George Houghton with the help of Antoine Claudet, glass seller, produces and sells England everything needed for the daguerreotype.

The firm Houghton & Sons produced Cameras quantity and partners with German W. Butcher to become Houghton-Butcher Ldt in 1926 and eventually took the name "Ensign Ldt."
